One account, two balances
They are separate columns rather than one number with a flag, because they behave differently, and knowing which one a call is spending is the whole of understanding the bill.
Subscription minutes
Your plan’s monthly allowance. Spendable in the studio and through the API alike, and it resets at the start of each billing period rather than rolling over.
API minutes
Bought as a pack and spendable through the API and MCP only, while your plan includes API access, cancelling pauses a balance rather than deleting it, and resubscribing brings it back. An API call spends the monthly allowance first, so the balance that resets goes before the one that does not.

From 4.8¢ down to 2.9¢ a minute. One-off payments, no subscription, and nothing expires.
Packs are bought from your API dashboard, on the account you already have. There is no separate developer subscription and no second invoice.
Throughput, not access
The API and the MCP server are on Creator, Pro, Studio and Podmaxxing, and access is the same on each. What a bigger plan buys is a larger allowance, a wider request budget and more jobs in flight at once.
